Indie Developer One Little Goat Pleads with Apple CEO – Stop Rejecting My App

One Little Goat proprietor Philip Lemon, believes his app was rejected solely because one of the eight celebrity caricatures in the game is based on the late Steve Jobs. He supports his claim by providing the following correspondence from Apple;

“We’ve reviewed your app and determined that we cannot post your application because it appears to contain features, namely, imagery, that bear a resemblance to several well-known third-party marks, including Steve Jobs.”

Phil’s response to this was, “Well Duh, it’s a parody. Do a search and you’ll find dozens, if not hundreds of apps that use the likeness of celebrities. I didn’t see Apple taking down Joustin Beaver when Justin Bieber sued the game maker for using his likeness. “

There does appear to be both censorship and double standards at play when you consider that blatant copyright rip-offs like Mole Kart, Ultimate iZelda Climb and Pokemon Yellow were all approved by Apple. Phil reports that he has questioned Apple about this inconsistency, and has requested Apple specify which elements of his game are in breach of copyright, but his questions have been met by a firewall of silence. This stonewalling is what prompted the open letter to the CEO of Apple and Mr Lemon decided satire was the best way to deliver his message.

When asked why he hasn’t just removed the offending cartoon character Mr Lemon replied “I could remove Peeved No-Jobs (Phil’s pet name for the character) but why should I have to? Apple isn’t North Korean and I’m not making fun of Kim Jong Il – at least I think I’m not”.

Though he supports Apple’s vetting of apps based on quality and security, Mr Lemon is against certain Apple developer policies such as the one that states;

“we (Apple) may reject or remove your application for any reason, in our sole discretion.”

Like most mobile developers worldwide, One Little Goat relies on sales through iTunes and not having his game available there could lead to commercial oblivion. Celebrity Smack is available for Android devices through Google Play and Amazon and Mr Lemon hopes his game will garner enough support through these online marketplaces to make the game financially viable.

“I think it is totally unacceptable that a company that dominates an industry built on ideas can dictate what people share,” Mr Lemon says. “They’re an American company and the majority of their paying customers are from democratic countries.”

When asked if he would submit future apps to iTunes Phil responded “Definitely. I’m like most game makers, I just want as many people as possible playing my games and enjoying them. Hopefully Apple will improve its policies or Android will become the platform of choice for developers.”

The open letter to Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, can be found at http://onelittlegoat.com/letter_to_apple_ceo.html

Philip Lemon is a developer and artist living in Melbourne, Australia. One Little Goat is the name of his studio and Celebrity Smack is his first solo game. Past achievements of Philip’s include being the lead Animator on the iOS game Desert Zombie, Executive producer on the Australian film The Hobby Farm, and authoring the children’s novel The Barbarian Librarian. Philip loves doing interviews and can talk at length without saying um. He has been told his voice is melodic and well suited to radio but this is yet to be proved.

SearchCatalyst Highlights Why Duplicate Web Content is Bad for Small Businesses

Duplicate web page content is bad for any website because it greatly affects SEO, but SearchCatalyst, an SEO agency dealing exclusively in small business Internet marketing, says it is particularly bad news for small businesses.

Aside from negatively impacting on a user’s online experience, duplicate content is particularly disastrous for SEO. It affects the site’s credibility, which is one of the most important ways a site can rank highly, organically, on search engines like Google. Google ranks sites based on several criteria, each of which is built into its complicated search algorithm. Relevancy is the most important – does the site list content relevant to the search query? – but credibility is a close second.

However, this issue affects all businesses, big and small. An issue that is more likely to affect small businesses, or expanding ones in the processes of upgrading their websites and online presence comes down to duplicate content on developer sites. Quite often web developer domains – where developers work on websites – are indexed by Google. Developers can be completely unaware they have created duplicate content but as websites take a few months to develop they can sit on developer domains for a while and the duplicate pages will negatively affect search rankings on Google.

This generally impacts small businesses to a greater extent than larger companies because they don’t have the scope and finances to implement new pages quickly.

Google’s algorithms are highly sophisticated and can filter out sites that have duplicate content. Some may be labelled as spam as a result, whilst others will just be listed much lower down on the SERPs. Google has become much better at detecting duplicate content since the Panda algorithm update, which all small businesses and developers should be aware of.

SearchCatalyst offers affordable SEO services to small businesses looking to boost organic search rankings and gain greater online exposure at minimal cost.

These Days A Professional, Efficient And Stylish Website Is A Vital Component Of Any Business Aiming To Be Successful

We are currently living in a very modern age of technology, which has filtered through into every aspect of our lives, from ordering our weekly groceries online, to booking train, cinema and concert tickets, to children’s online learning environments and schoolwork. Everything nowadays is done online.

A very important part of having a business in the twenty-first century is having a website. You need a website that clearly displays what you are and what you do, and immediately impacts to your customers why they desperately need you.

Not only do you need a website, but it has to be a good one. The best way to achieve the top website for your company is to hire a freelance web designer or a web design team. A web design team will generally give you a better result as each member of the team has his or her own strengths, that will all be pulled together to achieve the exact website you need and want.

There are hundreds and hundreds of web designers out there, so you need to carefully look through their online portfolios to see what captures your attention. There will be some work you really love and others that you don’t. You will also notice that some web design companies have worked for very large, international companies, whilst other have only done work for local businesses. Other companies will have worked for a range of large, successful companies and smaller, local companies.

Ideally you want to try and pick a web design company whose work you love, that is located near to your business. That way you can really connect with them personally and easily have meetings to discuss exactly what you need and what you want from them. It’s much easier to talk about web design in person rather than over the phone.

If you are in South East England, or more specifically in Kent, then the team you want is TME (http://www.tmesolutions.co.uk). They are a web design and online marketing agency, based in Kent, which has been running for seven years. They are a close-knit, family run team comprising of fourteen enthusiastic and creative coders, designers, online marketers and project consultants.

Over the years, they have built their business to be efficient, creative and successful, yet friendly. They’ve worked to provide web design in Kent for relatively small local companies such as Lau Hairdressing in Maidstone, Express Cleaning Supplies in Aylesford, and ACE Sheds in Ashford. Their new websites allowed these local companies to bloom; expanding greatly and increasing their profits rapidly.

As their own company grew, TME also started to work for some of the biggest, most successful and most profitable companies in the world. This includes the likes of Tile Depot, who own over twenty stores across the UK and Centroid Motion Capture who provide animation for major films. Additionally, Worldwide Parcel Services, who are one of the largest parcel couriers in the UK, and most impressively, an exclusive training portal for Samsung Mobile.

TME are one hundred percent committed to producing amazing, creative and useful websites. They take companies and aim to boost their profits, regardless of how famous they already are. They strive for improvement.

Latest Leighmans.com Research Shows Companies Spending More on Corporate Gifts

A new poll conducted by Leighmans.com – one of the UK’s leading suppliers of corporate gift and incentive products – has revealed that companies are now spending more than ever on corporate and personalised gifts. The company’s poll found that 75 percent of UK businesses are – even in the difficult financial climate – investing more in hospitality and gifts.

The Leighmans.com survey polled in excess of 1,000 people and discovered that six in ten companies currently spend more on incentives and gifts for clients and staff. Of this group 40 percent said that their expenditure has recently increased by over one fifth.

The poll found that personalised gifts are more popular than ever too, with 45 percent of respondents saying that they prefer customised gifts to standard ones. Leighmans.com reports that items like their printed Shanghai pen range and personalised custom 15mmlanyards are proving particularly popular.

Dr Ashley Weinberg, senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Salford, commented: “In sales ‘we buy from people we like’ and so, at a very basic level, some potential consumers may well feel a little emotional boost from an organisation offering them something without charge.”

“Even for those who decline the offer of a gift or hospitality, there is some perception that the organisation who offered it is one that we’re likely to be more open to in future.”

“In this case, we have created our own unwritten understanding – or psychological contract – that raises our expectations of the organisation and means we may be more positively disposed to them.”

The Leighmans.com poll sought to established buying patterns and psychologies in the corporate gifts sector at present. Leighmans.com offers customers a wide range of goods such as sponsored Rainham conference bags with logos on the inside. The survey also found that UK companies spent more money on gifts and incentives in 2012 than in all of 2011.

Leighmans.com founder, Darren Leigh, commented: “Far from the pre-conceived notion that marketing and entertainment are the first things to be cut when the going gets tough, it actually appears businesses are investing more into the development and maintenance of relationships through entertainment and effective promotions.”

“Building business relationships is vital. It can be done through meetings and entertaining and also through carefully selected gifts to existing or potential new business leads. It’s appreciated because it not only represents a financial investment, but also shows empathy and the fact you have invested time into trying to get into the other person’s head to give them something they want. That helps to create and build relationships, which are vital for ongoing business.”

Speaking of human behaviour, Dr Weinberg said: “Perhaps somewhere in between feeling really positive and just as negative, is the vague notion that we might feel indebted, as this organisation has already given us something which is of value. It is not quite an obligation, but it can certainly affect that psychological contract when we come to deciding where to buy from.”

Bury-based Leighmans.com helps customers to choose from a huge range of high-quality, promotional gifts and its customer base includes major blue-chip companies such as Deutsche Bank.

brightsolid and The British Library Publish 4 Million Pages Of Historical Newspapers Online

brightsolid and The British Library have announced the launch of a website that will transform the way that people use historical newspapers to find out about the past.

The British Newspaper Archive website will offer access to up to 4 million fully searchable pages, featuring more than 200 newspaper titles from every part of the UK and Ireland. The newspapers – which mainly date from the 19th century, but which include runs dating back to the first half of the 18th century – cover every aspect of local, regional and national news.

The website offers a wealth of material for people researching family history, including family notices and announcements and obituaries, while the ability to search by keyword/s, location, date and newspaper title means that people can search across hundreds of thousands of pages at a time as they track down that elusive ancestor. Searching the website generates free preview snippets of results found but users wishing to download full articles and images can pay to do so with a range of payment options available, including pay-per-view access for 48 hours or 30 days and a subscription package for a year. The website is free to use in the British Library’s reading rooms.

“The launch of the British Newspaper Archive website opens up the British Library’s newspaper collection as never before,” said Ed King, the British Library’s Head of Newspapers. “Rather than having to view the items on-site at the Library, turning each page, people across the UK and around the world will be able to explore for themselves the gold-mine of stories and information contained in these pages – and the ability to search across millions of articles will yield results for each user, that might previously have been the work of weeks or months, in a matter of seconds and the click of a mouse.”

The British Newspaper Archive is the result of a ten-year partnership between the British Library and brightsolid, announced in May 2010. Over the past 12 months, brightsolid’s digitisation team, based at the British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale, has been digitising up to 8,000 pages of historic newspapers every working day. The project is expected to scan up to 40 million newspaper pages over the next ten years. The site also offers high quality A1 prints.

Welcoming the new website, Ed Vaizey MP, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, said: “The British Newspaper Archive is a rich and hugely exciting resource, packed with historical detail. It’s a great example of the public and private sectors collaborating to deliver something that neither party could have delivered by themselves. I searched for my own constituency of Wantage and within seconds had 42,000 results – an indication of the breadth and variety of material featured.”

The launch and further expansion of the British Newspaper Archive website will help the British Library to fulfil its strategic goals of long-term preservation of and access to the national newspaper collection, including old London newspapers. The Library’s newspaper strategy aims to secure the future of this unique resource by moving the hard-copy collections from the current building at Colindale to a purpose-built storage facility in Boston Spa, West Yorkshire. Access to the collection will be provided via microfilm and digital copies made available at the Library’s main site at St Pancras.

Online Shopping Boom Makes Parcel Courier Choice Even More Important

The spike in internet shopping means it is more important than ever to ensure goods purchased online are delivered by a reliable parcel delivery firm, says Parcel2Go.

Over the past year, UK retailers have seen more and more consumers purchasing goods through the internet – not a huge surprise considering the range of products and discounts available online. Much of the growth in online shopping is related to increased use of smartphones.

Communications regulator Ofcom said earlier this month that over a quarter of adults and almost half of all teenagers now own a smartphone. Separate research conducted by comScore found that the number of British smartphone owners who accessed internet retail sites in the three months to the end of May increased 163 per cent year-on-year.

However, according to the Bolton-based parcel delivery specialist, there are potential pitfalls linked to this sharp increase in online activity and internet shopping. According to Richard Mercer, marketing director at online parcel delivery firm Parcel2Go, choosing the wrong carrier to deliver your package can be costly.

He said: “Finding a reliable parcel courier has always been important for individuals and businesses sending consignments within the UK and abroad. However, the huge increase in online shopping means that there are more people than ever having goods purchased online delivered to their homes and workplaces.

“Ensuring that a reliable and reputable carrier is handling your package won’t only provide peace of mind, it will also ensure that the goods arrive in one piece. Using a service like Parcel2Go means you’ll enjoy the services of a leading courier and your items will get to their destination on time and in the right condition.”

Parcel2Go has been helping businesses and individuals find the right international parcel delivery service to suit their needs for more than 20 years. The business now handles in excess of two million parcels every year.

“We hope that customers old and new will find posts on there that appeal, and we’re asking people to make full use of the comment facilities available. Blog posts aren’t a one way conversation, we want to get people involved – talking to us and each other about the issues and stories that are affecting them.”

BalkansTravelGuru.com – Free Balkans Travel Assistance

Balkans Travel Guru announced today the successful release of its FREE Balkans travel assistance website, balkanstravelguru.com. The site was created to assist travelers in the Balkans with where to go, what to do, where to find products or services and what they need to know for each and every country in the Balkans. Whether it is planning before your trip, or during your trip, Balkans Travel Guru has the information needed to make your travel easier.

Tourism has fallen sharply throughout the Balkans. Experts believe that a well-informed traveler is a return traveler. Balkans Travel Guru is not a travel agent but an online resource to travelers or potential travelers. Its mission is to increase travel in the Balkans by having well informed travelers and inspire them to travel throughout. The company is currently working on an IPhone and IPod application to further assist the traveler.

“It is a unique tool; there is nothing more frustrating than going to a city and not being able to find what you need. As a business traveler, I need to know so I can do more. You can even find where the local stationary is in Tirana” Said Michael Velop.

Podcast Keeps Co-operative Staff Informed Of Head Office Developments

The podcast, which will be produced periodically between now and the opening of the Group’s new £100m home, is part of a commitment to communicate progress to both staff and the public.

The Group will move into the 325,000 sq ft of open plan office and support space on Miller Street in 2012.

Produced by the Internal Communications team, the podcast includes interviews with the Group’s Programme Director for the new building, Peter Cookson, and Ian Fleming from its construction partners BAM.

Robert Cohen, Senior Communications Manager at the Group said: “We’re really excited to be able to launch this podcast, which will give people across the country the chance to find out about some of the qualities that will make our new home such an exciting and unique place to work. The podcast allows the people involved with the project to really bring it to life and there is a lot of fascinating information that you can only get through the podcast.”

BookmarksHub is an SEO friendly website that allows users to publish their own articles or read other articles and comment on them or share them with their friends and business associates.

This means that as a business person or affiliate trying to promote your business online, you not only get to publish and share your business related articles or press releases online, but Bookmarks Hub also allows search engines to popularize your website for free.

You can even create a group for your business and invite all your customers to keep them apprised of any offers, promotions and future developments. This makes Bookmarks Hub an ideal portal for online marketing and business promotion. Whether you wish to launch a new business or promote an existing one, sell a product or gauge response from already existing customers — as a Bookmarks Hub user, you get to promote your business for free!

Bookmarks Hub is also a great platform for voicing your opinion, sharing your ideas and getting yourself heard on the web. On Bookmarks Hub, users can create their own groups, add friends, and send and share messages with other users. Groups allow users to share articles with other members with a common interest in a topic. As a user, you can join a group to submit topical articles that other members would be interested in. You can also create your own group and share your knowledge and enthusiasm about your area of interest with other kindred fellows. Some groups may require membership approval before you become part of the group.
