Findmypast.co.uk Begins Publishing Chelsea Pensioners’ Service Records

Findmypast.co.uk publishes online Chelsea Pensioners’ British Army Service Records 1873-1900, providing colourful insights into the lives of ordinary ranking soldiers born in the UK and worldwide.

Leading family history website findmypast.co.uk has published online for the first time nearly half a million military service records of men who were pensioned out of the British Army between 1873 and 1900 and who received a pension administered through the Royal Hospital at Chelsea. Findmypast.co.uk has been working in association with The National Archives for nearly two years to scan, transcribe and publish these records online.

Known as “WO 97” at The National Archives, the first tranche of these records are now available to search online at findmypast.co.uk for the first time ever. Once complete, the entire collection will comprise over 6 million full colour images of the service records of soldiers in the British Army in receipt of a pension administered by The Royal Hospital Chelsea, and who were discharged between the dates 1760 and 1913. Many of the soldiers listed will have served in some of Britain’s most significant wars, including the Battle of Waterloo, the Crimean and both Boer Wars.

The details that can be found in these records are invaluable to family and military historians, providing a rich and colourful story of people’s family history, with a level of detail that is hard to find in any other historical records. The information could include the soldier’s date and place of birth, name and address of next of kin, height, hair and eye colour, distinguishing features such as tattoos, rank and regiment, occupation before joining the army, medical history and when and where the soldier served.

BT Business and CAN Media have announced a new deal which means two million viewers in schools and GP surgeries across the UK will have access to a private TV information service. The three-year,£20 million+ contract will see BT take over the delivery, installation and operational management for the Life Channel Service from CAN Media.

The Life Channel Service, the UK’s largest private television network with over seven million viewers, is used by local government agencies to showcase and promote health and educational initiatives to the local community. Research* has shown the channel is more than twice as effective as posters and up to three times more than leaflets in communicating health and well-being messages.

Life Channel campaigns help schools improve their Ofsted ratings, and the NHS in achieving the national priorities set out by the Department of Health and measured by the Care Quality Commission. Independent research** has shown that 1 in 2 primary school and 1 in 3 secondary school pupils positively modify their behaviour as a result.

Working with partner Croft Technology plc, BT Business will take over the operational management of the existing Life Channel network. It will also install and manage the service in 5,000 schools and 4,000 GP surgeries, provide broadband, PCs and up to four large panel TV screens at each site.

BT Unveils Priority Business Class Fibre Broadband

This announcement sees BT Retail confirm that it will make fibre-based broadband available to 40 per cent of the UK – or some 10 million premises – by summer 2012. 2.5 million premises in total will have access by late summer and four million by the end of 2010.

From 26 January, new and existing BT Business customers in an enabled exchange area will automatically be eligible for the fibre service. 50 per cent of UK businesses can currently also receive ADSL 2+ broadband speeds of up to 20Mb/s at no extra cost to copper services.

First Electoral Roll Update of the New Year

Historically, those eligible to vote could only add their details to the Electoral Roll once a year. However, since the introduction of the Rolling Register, people whose personal circumstances have changed during the year – for example they move home – are now able to register their new details onto the electoral database throughout the year.
