A Boy’s Secret Santa Letter Reaches The North Pole

This Christmas season is not like all the rest, my work shop has been overflowing with toys for months now. Everyone here is busy putting the finishing touches on things. There seems to be more and more good children every year! Here at the North Pole we always keep our Christmas trees decorated and our wreaths on our doors. Everyone here at the North Pole loves to live with the joy of Christmas all year long. But we are always preparing for that special night of celebration – the night when I visit all the good boy’s and girl’s all over the world! It’s a wonderful time indeed.

Just this morning I received a Santa Letter from a special little boy that lives very far away from the North Pole. He wrote to tell me a secret Christmas wish and to ask for a special Christmas gift. Of course Santa doesn’t share secrets so I can’t tell you what this little boy wants for Christmas. But I’ve already checked my list and he has been nice all year long and I know that’s not always easy to do. This little boy always remembers to leave out my favorite snack (cookies) for me on Christmas too! In fact, last year he even left out treats for my reindeer. They get tired and hungry during our long trip to all the good little boy’s and girl’s houses around the world.

I’ll write a letter back to this little boy later tonight. I try to answer all of the Santa letters I get but sometimes that’s hard to do. I get letters all year long from boys and girls that live all around the world. I always write letters in the evening, after Mrs. Claus and I eat supper and eat some of the tasty cookies kids send us! It’s a nice way to end the day.

Believe it or not, I get letters from grownups too. After all, they want things for Christmas and I guess sometimes they feel like I’m the only one that can help. I’m happy to do it. I love to make people happy. I think the good in Mrs. Claus has rubbed off on me! Did you know that she usually brings me a plate of warm cookies and milk while I’m writing?

The only day of the year that I don’t answer letters is on Christmas Eve. On that day I am just too busy. I have to be sure I have everything ready for my long trip around the world. There’s so much to do when you’re packing Christmas gifts for people all around the world!

Not only did Marty get a new bike, but he also got a collection of books about his favorite hero, “Courage Mouse”. No More Playtime: Children Spend Their Free Time Staring at a Screen Instead

A new generation hooked on digital content is shunning traditional playtime in favour of watching TV and surfing the internet, according to new research from uSwitch.com, the independent comparison and switching service. The report also reveals a high proportion of children using the internet and watching TV unsupervised in their bedrooms after being sent to bed, while an alarming number of parents have yet to set up the necessary control measures to protect them from viewing unsuitable content.

In a typical day, outside of school hours children spend an average of 1.4 hours online and 1.6 hours watching television. Not only does this mean that they are spending 3 hours a day staring at a screen, but it suggests that surfing the internet is set to take over from watching TV as the most popular children’s recreational activity.

But where does this leave old fashioned playtime, and are we creating a new generation of internet addicts? Children today have a plethora of digital distractions whether they are in the form of games consoles such as the Wii, or social networking sites such as Bebo, with traditional playtime all but lost. Worryingly, 29% of children now have a computer in their bedroom and almost two thirds (63%) of these use it before going to sleep. Similarly, nearly half (49%) have a TV in their room and 64% regularly watch this in bed.

Despite nearly a third (30%) of parents worrying about information or images that they have found their child looking at on a website or on TV, just 41% of parents always supervise their children using the internet and 11% never do. Over half of parents (55%) leave it up to their children to decide which websites to visit, based on either guidelines they have set or common sense.

Taking the issue of parental control extremely seriously, all major broadband companies offer filtering facilities in their broadband packages, usually for free, enabling parents to have more control over the information and images viewed by their children. Yet over a third of parents (34%) have not set up any filters or blocks on their home internet: 22% believe that it’s too time consuming, and a further 21% simply haven’t got round to setting it up. A third of parents (32%) are unaware of the parental control features available with their service.

Jason Glynn, communications expert at uSwitch.com, says: “In an age where engaging content such as on-demand TV will only increase the amount of hours our children spend online, we urge parents to contact their internet providers to see what controls are available to them. Speed and price should take second place to safety – but with most broadband services including filtering software for free, there really is no excuse not to take action.

“We fully support the measures being laid out by companies to help families tackle this issue, such as TalkTalk’s plans to classify websites with U, PG, 14 and 18 certificates. Our research shows that 8 out of 10 parents would back such a system.”

What is happening at Virgin Games?

Virgin Games is historically a marketing company that has promoted gaming services from three different gaming operators (Wagerworks for Casino, Boss Media for Poker and St Minver for Bingo).

We have made the big jump Last November when we officially became an operating company in our own right. That’s when Virgin Poker was added to our new shiny single account/single wallet system.

Each of our gaming products has required individual registration. Until now it was hard for our players to browse seamlessly through our game offerings. This is about to change. Once all our products are integrated, new players will only need to register once, after which they will have access to our full library of games. We are keeping the 50% welcome rate for 2 months, after which our standard base rates jumps from 30% to 35% flat for both Poker AND Casino, and we are dropping the tiered system.

Virgin Bingo rates remain unchanged at this stage.

Confused? Here’s an example :

You are a new affiliate who sends us a new player from a Cleopatra or Elvis banner from your site. Chances are this player likes playing slot machines. As the affiliate who sent us this player, not only will you get 35% (or whatever rate you’re on) revenue share on his slots game-play, but you will also – should this player decide to play poker a few days later – get a full 35% on his poker rake. Whatever game the player you sent decides to go for, and whatever the software provider, you will receive prime rates for their play, across all games all the time.

New reporting

Even though most of our promotional strategy through the affiliate system will remain unchanged (we will still provide game specific banners and marketing tools), the boundaries between products and type of players will slowly fade, and your reports will change accordingly.

When is this happening?

Virgin Casino will be integrated tomorrow 6am GMT. From this time onwards everyone you send who registers at Virgin Casino will become a Virgin Games player, earning you automatic commission on both Casino and Poker gameplay.

What is going to change, and how?

Player report

Your new “Virgin Games” Player Report will now show Virgin Games players who have played at Virgin Casino AND Virgin Poker (as opposed to one report for Virgin Casino and another one for Virgin Poker). Virgin Bingo will remain as a separate tab until it joins the party next May.

Filters will be added to the Player Report so you will be able to run it only for Poker or Casino gameplay, or both.

A drop down archive report will also be available for you to check your old stats:
– pre Virgin Casino integration – taking place tomorrow,
– pre Poker integration (i.e. before 19th November 2008, but that\’s already available in our system)

New structure generally involves new branding, and we won’t be the odd ones out: new logos, new messages and imagery are part of the reshuffling, and that’s exciting news. Again you will not need to move a finger. We’ll make sure our banners, logos and other graphic materials are overwritten with the flashy new version, so the updated versions will show automatically on your site.

Note: if you are hosting the banners locally, it is your responsibility to get the updated version from our site.

We understand it may be more practical / reassuring for some affiliates to host the banners themselves; but if you do you will be responsible for the extra work that goes with this decision, i.e. you will need to manually update all of your outdated banners. This is really important as the last thing anyone wants is a visitor getting to our site through an interest for an outdated promotion. This is as bad PR for us as it is for you (the affiliate), as we will have to apologize to the player and explain that you should have updated your site and didn’t.
